Outlook security settings for EEO (Article # 98)

View products that this article applies to.

Problem:

When using EEO in both classic client and in fcClient, Outlook client may prompt users if it is OK for another program to interact with Outlook.

Example prompt:  A program is trying to send email - do you want to allow this?

Another prompt when using Execute method in the Outlook object model:

Excerpt from msdn on the Execute method:
When you run a program that uses the Microsoft Outlook object model to call the Execute method, you receive a warning message. This warning message tells you that a program is trying to execute an action or verb on your behalf and asks if you want to allow that. The warning message contains both a Yes and a No button. However, the Yes button is not available until five seconds have passed since the warning message appeared. You can dismiss the warning message immediately if you click No.

Resolution:

You can modify Outlook security settings so that these operations are allowed by using the Outlook Administrator pack to customize settings on the Exchange Server.  The Outlook Admin Pack is part of the Office Resource Kit.  Download an install the Office resource kit on a computer (preferably your local computer).  Links: http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/tools/BoxA10.htm

You may need to refer to the Microsoft Knowledgebase for other Outlook versions.  Follow the readme instructions that come with the Admin Pack for Customizing the Outlook security settings.

Look in c:\program files\ORKTOOLS\ORK11\TOOLS\Outlook Administrator Pack  Read the readme.doc, it explains how to get the security template into your system.

Follow the directions to install the security template into your Public Folders.  Once you have the template installed and the controls registered (if  necesssary) and all that, here are the particular settings we use for EEO:  (open the template, switch to the Programmatic tab) (by default, everything is 'Prompt User', set the following to 'Automatically Approve'):  1- When sending items via Outlook object model:  2- When sending items via CDO  4- When accessing the address book via Outlook object model  5- When accessing the address book via CDO  7- When accessing address information via Outlook object model  8- When accessing address information via CDO  11- When executing Save As via Outlook object model  13- When accessing address information via UserProperties.Find in Outlook object model  Notes:  1. Part of the readme includes instructions for installing a registry key on the client machine.  This is a necessary step.  2. On the Security Settings template, be sure to choose Automatically approve for "When executing a custom action via Outlook object model"

Resolution:

In order for your outlook clients to take advantage of these security settings, you may have to add or update a registry key.

Specifically:
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Security\CheckAdminSettings
The key value should be a DWORD set to 1 in order for it to use the server security settings.
