Error changing a password to a string starting with non letter characters (Article # 341)

View products that this article applies to.

Problem:

Affects: Any application that uses the Dovetail SDK against an Oracle database

Users will get the following error when attempting to change their password to a string that starts with anything other than a letter.

ORA-00988: missing or invalid password(s)

Resolution:

This error is related to the unfortunate way that Clarify couples to the database. When a user changes their password they are really doing it against both Clarify and the underlying DBMS.

In Oracle it is not legal to have passwords starting with numbers. Thus the same is true for Clarify systems that use Oracle.

Here is a summary pulled from the Oracle forums on the default password restrictions:

"The password must start with a letter (Oracle database passwords are not case sensitive) Subsequent characters may be letters, numbers, or the symbols # (pound sign), $ (dollar sign) or _ (underscore)."
