Installing web applications on IIS7 (Vista and Widows Server 2008) fails. (Article # 338)

View products that this article applies to.

Problem:

Changes to how Internet Information Server (IIS) is configured have caused problems with installers for Dovetail applications which create virtual web directories. These installer were designed to create virtual directories on IIS 6

You may get an error "Cannot connect to Internet Information Server" or "Failed to read IIsWebs table"

Resolution:

Add the IIS 6 Management Compatibility Features of IIS7

The following Dovetail blog post talks about how to do this:

http://blogs.dovetailsoftware.com/blogs/kmiller/archive/2008/08/19/installing-classic-asp-web-applications-on-iis7.aspx

When you run the installer you will need to have elevated privileges to modify IIS configuration. You need to make sure you run the .msi installer as an Administrator.

The easiest way to do this is to invoke the .msi file from an administrative command line.

To create one:

search for "cmd" in your windows start menu
Right-Click on cmd.exe
select "Run As Administrator"
run the msi file by entering the complege path to the msi file at the command line.
