Avoid unhelpful HTTP 500 - Internal server errors in your browser (Article # 274)

View products that this article applies to.

Problem:

When installing Dovetail web applications it is common to run into minor configuration errors. You need to be able to see the error message being returned by the web application when it is misconfigured to know what action to take. Internet Explorer’s default setting prevents detailed errors from being displayed.

When IE has "Friendly HTTP Error Messages" turned on you will only see the common HTTP 500 Internal server error page that says "This page cannot be displayed".

Resolution:

To turn off Friendly HTTP Error Messages do the following:

In Internet Explorer goto Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab
Scroll down to the Browsing section and uncheck "Show friendly HTTP error messages"

This will allow the browser to display the actual text of the error page being displayed.
