Installing Dovetail Admin or Dovetail Agent on Windows 2003 Server (Article # 100)

View products that this article applies to.

Problem:

There are some special requirements for installing the Dovetail Admin and/or Dovetail Agent ASP web applications on a Windows 2003 Server.

Resolution:

First, in order to run ASP applications, you must have the Internet Information Server installed. This is installed as part of the "Application Server" role.  Open the Manage Server Console (Start menu->Manage Server in the upper-left of the Start Menu) and, if the "Application Server" role is not already listed, click "Add or Remove role" and select the Application Server role.

Second, ASP is disabled by default on Windows 2003. You must explicitly enable ASP and Server Side Includes to allow Dovetail Admin and Dovetail Agent to run. Do this by clicking on "Manage this application server" in the Manage Server console, or by going to Start->Administrative Tools->Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Expand the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager in the tree view on the left and then expand your computer's tree node. Then click on the "Web Service Extensions" node. Click on "Active Server Pages" then click the "Allow" button. Repeat for "Server Side Includes".

Third, install Dovetail SDK and Dovetail Admion or Dovetail Agent. Note that if you've already installed Dovetail SDK, Dovetail Admin, or Dovetail Agent before this step, that's OK.

Fourth, back in Internet Services Manager, right click on the virtual root(s) you created for Dovetail Admin and/or Dovetail Agent and select Properties. On the "Virtual Directory" tab of the property page that appears, click the "Configuration" button under the "Application Settings" section. Click on the "Options" tab of the new property page that appears and check the "Enable Parent Paths" checkbox. Repeat these steps for Dovetail Admin and Dovetail Agent as necessary.

Fifth, grant filesystem permissions to the Dovetail Admin, Dovetail Agent to the IUSR_[COMPUTERNAME] user. Open My Computer or an Explorer window and navigate to the location which you installed Dovetail Admin and/or Dovetail Agent. right-click on the  directory and click Properties. Click the "Security' tab. Click "Add" to add a new group/user. For the object name to select, type: [COMPUTERNAME]\IUSR_[COMPUTERNAME] where [COMPUTERNAME] is the Windows computer/host name you gave to your Server (i.e. WEBSVR01). Click OK. Highlight that user in the list of Groups or users with permissions to this folder and verify that the IUSR_* user has "Read & Execute", "List Folder Contents", and "Read" permissions.

Repeat the permission steps for the directory in which Dovetail Agent and Dovetail Admin reside.

Remember to edit your FC.ENV file appropriately for Dovetail Admin and/or Dovetail Agent and then attempt to test the installation according to the Install Guide in the User Documentation for both Dovetial Admin and Dovetail Agent (usually this is just loading the URL in your browser and ensuring the login screen appears and you can login successfully).
